fantasy tarot cards

She flips over the card on the table with practiced fingers. You both take a moment to take in the image on the cart, and then her gaze flicks back up to you. "Strength," she says. "You bear the weight of  many on your shoulders."

"I do," you say, "gladly."

She her fingers brush over the card, and then she takes your hand in hers. "Do not forget to bear your own as well. Walls fall without a sturdy foundation."

This was a project born of the desire for some thematically appropriate tarot cards in more than a few of my Dungeons and Dragons games. I'm gradually working on new cards whenever I have the time and hope to eventually have a full set of Major Arcana cards.

The cards shown here are The Lovers, Strength, The High Priestess, and The High Priest.

where demons hide
illustrated novella

The whole earth seemed to drop off in front of me and open up to a beautiful, strange, breathtaking world of orange and yellow stone that stretched on as far as I could see. I leaned over the railing to see that past the jagged rocks and steep walls, a tiny river of blue snaked its way through the floor of the canyon. It was terrifying and it made me feel so small, but that’s what drew me in and made it so I never wanted to look away.

West leaned against the railing and the biggest, dumbest smile spread across his face. “Yeah, this is so much better than seeing it on a screen.”

“It’s pretty amazing,” I said.

West stepped up on one of the lower lateral rungs of the railing and hoisted himself up so he was two or three feet off the ground with his knees resting against the top of it.

“What are you doing?” I said, instinctively grabbing on to his pants so he wouldn’t pitch forward into the canyon.

“Therapy,” he said before throwing his head back and yelling at the top of his lungs. No words, just pure, unfiltered emotion.

My novella, Where Demons Hide, was written, illustrated, and successfully kickstarted in 2019. I self-published it in 2020 and it has been read by people all over the world. It contains over 15 illustrations within its pages

the book of lost magicka - charity zine illustrations

The Book of Lost Magicka is a zine full of homebrew content for tabletop RPGs. I did four pieces for the zine: one spot illustration for a spell called "Magician's Trap Door," one full-page illustration for a Battle Royale game mode, one full-page illustration for a rogue subclass, and a full-page illustration for the "Dungeon Master's Tools" chapter title page.

All of the proceeds for sales of The Book of Lost Magicka go to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the BLM movement.

wildlife
spot illustration

This spot illustration was inspired by my local zoo and is meant to capture the feeling of adventure that I get when I go there. I did volunteer work there when I was in high school and I loved having the chance to connect with so many beautiful animals. All of the animals depicted here -- the eagle, giraffes, cheetah, jaguar, and butterflies-- are all ones that can be found at our zoo, and the color and style of the piece were inspired by one of the illustrator Bob Peak's pieces.

cold war kids
album redesign challenge

I like to participate in some design challenges with some of my other illustrator friends sometimes, and this one came from a challenge to redesign an album cover from a band you love. I picked this album from Cold War Kids because I find the official cover kind of boring and I don't think it reflects the mood of the album at all.

This redesign was super fun and I loved the process of listening to the album and trying to visually depict what I heard within the music. This final image is the one that I think sums up the album the best.
