where demons hide

Where Demons Hide is a novella that I wrote and illustrated in 2019 and published in 2020. It follows Coral and West as they road trip across the US, try to unlock the secrets behind Coral's strange powers and memory loss, and face the lurking demons of their pasts.

“All right,” West said. “You can open your eyes.”

The whole earth seemed to drop off in front of me and open up to a beautiful, strange, breathtaking world of orange and yellow stone that stretched on as far as I could see. I leaned over the railing to see that past the jagged rocks and steep walls, a tiny river of blue snaked its way through the floor of the canyon. It was terrifying and it made me feel so small, but that’s what drew me in and made it so I never wanted to look away.

West leaned against the railing and the biggest, dumbest smile spread across his face. “Yeah, this is so much better than seeing it on a screen.”

“It’s pretty amazing,” I said.

West stepped up on one of the lower lateral rungs of the railing and hoisted himself up so he was two or three feet off the ground with his knees resting against the top of it.

“What are you doing?” I said, instinctively grabbing onto his pants so he wouldn’t pitch forward into the canyon.

“Therapy,” he said before throwing his head back and yelling at the top of his lungs. No words, just pure, unfiltered emotion.

embers

A work in progress, Embers is a novel about three childhood friends who--in a world full of people with superpowers--must prove that they deserve to be among the elite few who can call themselves Embers.

“Hannah?” Eric’s voice was raspy like he hadn’t used it in days. “Are you okay?”

Hannah was staring up at the ceiling, her gold eyes vacant. Her normally vibrant brown skin looked ashen and cold.

“Hey.” He put his hand on her shoulder and gently shook it. “I think we made it. This is the last test. We’re almost Embers.”

Hannah drew in a sharp breath like her lungs had been refusing air up to that moment. She sat up and her gaze danced around the room. Eric watched and waited. He knew how her brain worked. She was absorbing twice the information he could in half the time, drawing connections he never would have reached.

“We made it,” she repeated, her shoulders relaxing.

A smile spread over Eric’s face. “We flippin’ made it!”

“But I thought we totally failed the last trial.”

“I guess not,” Eric laughed, relief flowing through him.

“Don’t start celebrating just yet.” Eric turned around to see Willow sitting up, her fiery hair tousled and wild as ever. She grimaced as she massaged the back of her neck and stretched out her stiff muscles. “This last one is supposed to be a doozy."

edge of the sun

Edge of the Sun is a novel that I wrote in college that I am currently in the process of adapting into a visual novel video game. As Lux's life crashes down around her, she's contacted by a boy named Oliver who claims to be from a timeline separate from her own. Separated by the walls of reality, they try to piece together why their two worlds are starting to bleed into one another.

“Welcome back to Rainy Day Radio,” I said, closing my eyes so I couldn’t see the cobwebs hanging from the microphone arm. “I’m your host, Lux Bennett. As far as news goes this week, my girlfriend was brutally murdered yesterday and I am great at running away from my problems. In traffic, try to avoid the bridge on your way to work today unless you want a bunch of crazy assholes to chase you and threaten to throw you off the side. Also, there’s a giant hole in the middle of it, so if you were hoping to make it to that early morning meeting on time, you're shit out of luck.”

“I don’t think you’re allowed to curse on the radio.”

The voice startled me. I jumped away from the microphone and looked around the room, but there was no one else there.

“Hey, sorry if I scared you,” the voice came again. He wasn’t in the room, but he sounded like he was right next to me. “Are you still there?”

It was coming from the headphones.

I leaned back towards the microphone carefully, like it would shock me if I got too close. “H-hello?”

student of small magic

Student of Small Magic is a single-player pen-and-paper RPG that I am in the process of developing. In a world where only a select few have the ability to use Great Magic, you play as a student of every-day spellcasting known as Small Magic. Tasked by one of your professors with delivering a mysterious letter to a childhood friend, the player will use the friends you meet and the magic you learn along the way to figure out the reason behind his sudden disappearance.

You sit on the train, excitement building inside of you. You haven’t been to the city yet, despite going to school just a train-ride away. Looking out the window, you see it just come into view as the train rounds a bend. Still distant, but growing closer every moment. The letter you are to deliver rests on your lap, Nicolas Delaney written in looping handwriting across its face. You turn the letter over and run your fingers over the wax seal that keeps the secrets of the message hidden safely inside its thick envelope. You had watched as Professor Linden heated the wax over a candle, dripped it onto the paper, and pressed in the seal of Highwood College of Greater and Small Magic, all the while explaining to you that it was very important that you gave it to Nic directly.
